Multiple Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player Could Allow for Arbitrary Code Execution (APSB16-39)

OVERVIEW:

Multiple vulnerabilities have been discovered in Adobe Flash Player, the most severe of which could allow for arbitrary code execution if a user visits a specially crafted website. Adobe Flash Player is a widely distributed multimedia and application player used to enhance the user experience when visiting web pages or reading email messages. Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could result in an attacker gaining the same privileges as the logged on user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than those who operate with administrative user rights.

An exploit exists in the wild for CVE-2016-7892,and is being used in limited, targeted attacks against users running Internet Explorer (32-bit) on Windows.

TECHNICAL SUMMARY:

Adobe Flash Player is prone to multiple vulnerabilities which could allow an attacker to take control of the affected system by luring a victim to visit an infected website.

· Use-after-free vulnerabilities that can lead to code execution (CVE-2016-7872, CVE-2016-7877, CVE-2016-7878, CVE-2016-7879, CVE-2016-7880, CVE-2016-7881, CVE-2016-7892).

· Buffer overflow vulnerabilities that can lead to code execution (CVE-2016-7867, CVE-2016-7868, CVE-2016-7869, CVE-2016-7870).

· Memory corruption vulnerabilities that can lead to code execution (CVE-2016-7871, CVE-2016-7873, CVE-2016-7874, CVE-2016-7875, CVE-2016-7876).

· Security-bypass vulnerability (CVE-2016-7890).

Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could result in an attacker gaining the same privileges as the logged on user. Depending on the privileges associated with the user, an attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. RECOMMENDATIONS:

We recommend the following actions be taken:

· Install the updates provided by Adobe immediately after appropriate testing.

· Run all software as a non-privileged user (one without administrative privileges) to diminish the effects of a successful attack.

· Remind users not to visit websites or follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources.

· Inform and educate users regarding the threats posed by hypertext links contained in emails or attachments especially from un-trusted sources.

· Apply the Principle of Least Privilege to all systems and services.
