Why This Session Is Important To You:
This webcast provided attendees with an update on Federal Cybersecurity Initiaitives for States and Local Governments, including status of the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace and the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education.

National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace:
Cyberspace has become an indispensible component of everyday life for all Americans, shopping, connecting with friends, banking, blogging, reviewing medical records... we use it for just about everything. With more than 91% of Americans using mobile phones, many of them smart phones, the desire to stay connected has turned into a necessity and is now expected. In today's advanced world of technology, the importance of protecting personal identity is crucial now more than ever. Information including account passwords, credit card details, cell phone contacts and emails are all under the same umbrella when your life goes digital. One of the most important security issues at hand is the need for higher security and protection of identification credentials.

The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC), which is in response to action items in the President's Cyberspace Policy Review, calls for the creation of an online environment where individuals and organizations can complete online transactions with confidence, trusting the identities of each other. The NSTIC also seeks to drive the development of privacy-enhancing policies as well as innovative technologies to ensure that the ecosystem provides strong privacy protections for consumers.

A representative from the NSTIC National Program Office will provide webcast attendees with a look at how the National Strategy for Trusted Identities will work to establish, by means of a public-private partnership, identity solutions and privacy-enhancing technologies that will improve the security and convenience of sensitive online transactions by authenticating individuals, organizations, and the underlying infrastructures.

National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education:
Cybersecurity has been identified as one of the most serious economic and national security challenges we face as a nation. The National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) was established to help face this challenge head on with a strategy to build a cyber savvy nation through training, awareness, educational programs, and professional development for federal security professionals. The goal of NICE is to establish an operational, sustainable and continually improving cybersecurity education program for the nation to use sound cyber practices that will enhance the nation's security.

The Initiative is represented by four tracks:

  1. National Cybersecurity Awareness
  2. Formal Cybersecurity Education
  3. Federal Cybersecurity Workforce Structure
  4. Cybersecurity Workforce Training and Professional Development

A representative from the NICE National Program Office will discuss the current efforts underway and future plans.
