The sixth webcast in the 2010 National Webcast series was held on December 15th with a featured presentation on Security and Risk Management. More than 700 individuals representing 48 states, DC, one U.S. Territory, and five other countries registered for this event . Opening remarks were provided by Krista Montie, Director of Communications for the Center for Internet Security, followed by Mr. Tomm Larson, Information Security Instructor at the Center for Infrastructure Assurance and Security at the University of Texas at San Antonio and Mr. Rick Doten, Chief Scientist at Lockheed Martin's Center for Cyber Security Innovation.

This presentation provided a proactive and comprehensive approach that entities in both public and private sectors can use to manage security risks. Topics covered included:

  • an overview of basic risk management concepts
  • how to begin applying information security and risk management to an organization
  •  an overview of Advanced Persistent Threats, and introducing the audience to successful techniques to defend against them

    The Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division and the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center have partnered to establish the National Webcast Initiative to develop a series of national webcasts which will examine critical and timely cyber security issues. Embracing the concept that security is everyone's responsibility, these webcasts are available to a broad audience to help raise awareness and knowledge levels. A number of vendors have offered their services at no cost to government, to help develop and deliver the webcasts.

     

    The National Webcast Initiative is also coordinated by the New York State Office of Cyber Security and the New York State Forum.
