2010 National Cyber Security Awareness Month
Cyber Security Is Our Shared Responsibility

The Seventh Annual National Cyber Security Awareness Month was celebrated during October 2010, as a collective effort among the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center,  the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's National Cyber Security Division, the National Cyber Security Alliance and the National Association of State Chief Information Officers.

The month highlighted the importance of empowering citizens, businesses, government, and schools to improve their cyber security preparedness. In this digital age, we are all connected; the actions of one can impact many. Thus, it is essential that each of us understand our important role in securing cyberspace.

In recognition of the 2010 Cyber Security Awareness Month campaign, the MS-ISAC provided a number of educational and awareness resources, including the following:

  • MS-ISAC Cyber Security Toolkit

The MS-ISAC Cyber Security Toolkit features educational material designed to raise cyber security awareness through a variety of informative and practical means. The Toolkit was developed and distributed by the MS-ISAC to all 50 states as well as U.S. Territories, with customizable material that can be widely shared across government, businesses, schools and citizens. The 2010 Toolkit material is available for download:

  • Governors' Proclamations

Every governor in the nation was invited to endorse Cyber Security Awareness Month through the issuance of a proclamation or letter of support. Such recognition at the highest levels of state government is an important component in ensuring all Americans have the opportunity to learn more about cyber security and how to safeguard themselves from cyber-based threats.Last year, all 50 governors signed a proclamation or letter of support; this year we again hope to meet that goal.

  • Local Government Proclamations

We also encouraged local government officials to recognize Cyber Security Awareness Month by signing proclamations or letters of support.

As part of the October Awareness Month activities, the MS-ISAC coordinated a joint webcast with DHS and NCSA, along with several other sector-specific ISACs to discuss strategies on how to promote cyber security awareness at all levels, including government, businesses and academia. This broadcast featured dynamic discussions with leading industry experts and provided attendees with practical information on how to keep themselves and their organizations cyber secure.

  • MS-ISAC State and Local Government Best of the Web Contest

The MS-ISAC conducted its second annual Best of the Web contest to recognize state and local governments that use their websites to promote cyber security.  The MS-ISAC Education and Awareness Workgroup reviewed and judged state and local government cyber security websites based upon several criteria, including cyber security content, usability, accessibility, and appearance, The goal was to highlight commendable sites and serve as best practices for others to consider when developing or re-designing their own sites.
