The Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) held its Annual Meeting August 8-10 in Nashville, Tennessee with nearly 150 participants in attendance. The event brought together MS-ISAC members, representatives from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and industry experts to discuss challenges and solutions for addressing the cyber security threats facing state, local, territorial and tribal (SLTT) governments. The event was conducted in conjunction with the GFIRST Annual Conference, hosted by the United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team (US-CERT).

The Annual Meeting opened with remarks by William Pelgrin, MS-ISAC Founder and Chair, who highlighted successes of the past twelve months, including the launch of the new MS-ISAC 7x24 Security Operations Center, through which nearly 80 billion cyber security logs were analyzed and 140 early warning advisories were issued last year. Pelgrin discussed the latest threats and challenges ahead, emphasizing the importance of information sharing and strong partnerships to strengthen cyber security while maximizing limited fiscal and staff resources.

Special guest speakers from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security were Bobbie Stempfley, Acting Assistant Secretary of the DHS Office of Cybersecurity and Communications; Lee Rock, Acting Director of US-CERT; and Kelvin Coleman, Director of State, Local and Tribal Engagement with the DHS National Cyber Security Division.

Steve Hanna of the Trusted Computing Group, Chris Bream, Manager at MANDIANT and Patrick Gray, Principal Security Strategist at Cisco Systems provided keynote addresses. Michael Podobnik, Manager of Information Security at Facebook provided the closing keynote.

The Annual Meeting also included the installation of three new members to the MS-ISAC Executive Committee: Joseph Frohlich, IT Director for Ravalli County, Montana; Kristin Judge, Washtenaw County Commissioner, District 7, Michigan; and Lynne Pizzini, Information SecurityOfficer, State Information Technology Services Division, State of Montana.
